Tirzepatide vs Semaglutide
Tirzepatide and Semaglutide are changing the way we manage weight and type 2 diabetes. Both tirzepatide and semaglutide are GLP-1 receptor agonists, known for their ability to control blood sugar and promote significant weight loss. However, each has unique benefits, so how do you decide which is right for you?
Let's compare all aspects of these medications, including how they work in the body, their effectiveness, side effects, and cost considerations
Tirzepatide
Function
-
Acts as a GIP and GLP-1 receptor "booster"
-
Reduces hunger and slows food passage from the stomach to the small intestine, promoting a feeling of fullness.
-
Lowers blood sugar by decreasing sugar production in the liver and increasing insulin production.
Administration
-
Administered subcutaneously once a week.
-
Available in various strengths, tailored by compounding pharmacies.
How Does Compounded Tirzepatide Work?
Mechanism
-
Mimics naturally occurring GLP-1 hormone to regulate hunger, causing reduced food intake.
-
Imitates GIP hormone, which raises blood glucose levels and induces feelings of fullness.
-
Slows the passage of food through the intestines, keeping food in the stomach longer, which prolongs the feeling of fullness.
-
Superior to Semaglutide due to its action on two hormone receptors.
